System : 2-1-2 Overload

  • Overload 5 players one side of ice

Tactics

  • Always press the puck carrier
  • Always Out number the opposition 
  • Block the passing lanes

Reads:

  • When puck is on boards, overload zone

Keys:

  • Early pressure
  • Always out number in small area
  • Get possession of the puck

Rules:

  • Always have pressure on puck carrier
  • Finish your checks
  • 1st man body, 2nd man puck
  • Man, You, Goal
  • Body in shooting lane
  • Sticks in passing lanes

Tactic Forecheck – Soft Dump

  •  Pass the puck off the boards behind the defender. 
  • The puck can be retrieved either by the chipper or the support man driving through the middle.



Reads:

  • When to press?
  • When to contain?



Individual Tactics:
  • Take away the boards
  • Take away passing lane with stick
  • Angling 



Keys:

  • Finish checks when possible



Rules:

  • First man plays body, second picks up puck



Terms:

  • Pick Spot on Boards, Angle, Make Contact
  • Low man usually win the battles

USA – Canada IIHF 2012 Overload & Second Wave Attack



Principles:

  • Adding the fourth attacker simulates the second-wave-of-attack 
  • Overload a zone to create 2 v 1’s
Reads:
  • The defense needs to read when to jump into the attack
  • Recognize the 3 skating lanes, where and when to overload the ice

    Teaching Points:
    Make sure younger players, play offensive and defense in practice. This help develop the
    overall skills of the players. It teaches both offensive and defensive players to recognize the
    patterns of  play that occur in the game.
